Yes, I know his head seems to be in the wrong location. This is because he was beheaded. But why is he shown holding his head? St. Paul was also beheaded, but he's never been depicted like this.
Well, that's because Saint Denis was a badass.
According to legend, Saint Denis (after his beheading) carried his decapitated head. For six miles. Uphill. He preached a sermon the entire time too, which must of been pretty persuasive, considering that it was coming from the mouth of someone holding his own head...
In any case, he's now the Patron Saint of Paris, the town that had a love affair with the guillotine. Ironic, isn't it?
